Well Mother

Well Mother en vroedvrouwen

Labour is like a dance

Titel : ‘Shiatsu during labour in the hospital, guidelines for midwives and partners’

“I gave birth to both of my sons in 2 different hospitals in Belgium.

The deliveries were quiet complex. Although my mind wanted to give birth, I now understand that it was also about the connection of the heart and body, expressing  real emotions to allow you to open up and show who  you really are.

Even being supported by my lovely husband and a midwife, I couldn’t allow myself to show my deep fear. Also being in a hospital environment makes it often more difficult to stay in connection with your own rhythm and confidence. From this experience, I am convinced that having a person besides you, touching and bonding you with yourself and your energy can have a big impact on the natural flow of birth.

Shiatsu can be seen as an extra helping hand for the midwife. There is no interference with the medical world and her/his decisions: it is about cooperation and caring together.

“My drive to talk about the world of shiatsu to the medical world has grown ever since.

Of course it is not the aim to have a shiatsu practitioner besides every woman giving birth. Therefore it seems more useful to me to inform the medical staff about the eastern view of touching and bonding women with their natural flow of giving birth. I surely do not underestimate the knowledge of midwives; it is in fact another and complementary point of view.

I have always been surprised by the simplicity and power of the breath. For me it is essential to have a focused presence, a supporting touch and a slow abdominal breathing. They act all together and it is an important way  to release tension and share the pain. Also being aware of the aspects which work against the birth physiology : such as bright lights, conversation and being observed, will improve any support.

If the focus is often out of the body, due to thinking and planning, it will be difficult to connect with the body or  intuition of the mum. Being in contact with your own body as a midwife or partner through the breath, helps       connecting with the mums energy. Communicating without words.

The most  important aim of people surrounding and supporting a woman in labour, should be holding the mum focused into her body, relaxing her, connecting her with the baby and accepting the natural rhythm of labour  which is different for each mum. And last but not least trying to encourage changing position by working and moving together with the woman, to remind and support her body how to do it.

Labour is like a dance’

Let’s support the mum to create her own dance.
